Decking

Decking cleaning in Plymouth

Decking goes from garden feature to slip hazard in about two winters. It comes back further than most people expect.

Freshly cleaned timber decking in a Plymouth garden

Grey and green back to timber

Softwood decking silvers off, then goes green, then black. Underneath the weathered layer the timber is usually sound and still has colour in it.

Cleaning takes the algae and the surface grey off and gets back to bare timber. If you are planning to oil or stain it, this is the step that has to happen first — a finish put over a dirty, damp deck will not key and will lift within the season.

  • Softwood, hardwood and composite decking
  • Grooves cleaned out, not just the tops of the boards
  • Anti-slip treatment available for shaded decks
  • Prepared and dried ready for oiling if you are doing that afterwards
  • Steps, handrails and balustrades included

Composite is not maintenance-free

Composite decking does not rot and does not need oiling, which gets sold as "no maintenance". It still grows algae on the surface like everything else outdoors, particularly in the grooves.

It also scars easily. Composite needs low pressure and a wide fan — a narrow jet held close will leave permanent tracks across the boards. Tell us which you have; the two are not always obvious apart from a photo.

How it works

Straightforward, start to finish

  1. Send a photo

A quick picture on WhatsApp of the drive, roof or patio tells us more than a form ever will.

  2. Get a price

A clear figure for the job, agreed before anything starts. No day rates that drift.

  3. We turn up

On the day agreed, with our own water and power. You do not need to be in for most jobs.

  4. See it finished

We walk it with you if you are there, and send before-and-after photos if you are not.

Common questions

Will the boards splinter?

Not at the pressure decking should be cleaned at. Boards already soft or rotten may lose material — but if that happens, they needed replacing anyway and it is better to know.

Can you oil or stain it afterwards?

Ask when you get your quote. It needs several dry days after cleaning before anything goes on, so it is a second visit rather than the same day.

My deck is really slippery — will cleaning fix that?

Largely, yes, because the slip is the algae film. For a permanently shaded deck we would also suggest an anti-slip treatment on top.

Do you clean composite decking?

Yes, at lower pressure. Composite marks permanently if it is cleaned like timber.

Get the deck usable again

Send a couple of photos and roughly where you are, and you’ll get a price back. No charge for the quote and no pressure either way.
